How does employee relocation work?

With an employee relocation, your company will relocate employees (anywhere from one to a large number) to a different location of your company, domestically or internationally. You may do this to enhance your competitiveness in your industry, to open a new location for your business, to transfer newly hired employees, or for other reasons uniquely your own. As part of the employee relocation, you’ll create or rely upon already-existing corporate policies to share what relocation costs and support will be provided by the company.

Examples of relocation assistance can include packing and unpacking services, household goods transportation and/or storage. If moving to another country, it can involve assistance in helping the employees to learn a new language and about the culture of their new homeland. What is a fair relocation package?

Employee relocation assistance can vary significantly, based upon multiple factors. If, for example, your business is in an especially competitive space—like tech or finance—then you may offer more generous assistance to retain your talent. The size of your company can make a difference—and so can what you’ve done in the past if this isn’t your first employee relocation assistance package. If you’re going off of past packages, consider the inflation rate at the time versus today.

Beyond those factors, consider what your company can afford to pay to keep quality employees and how your company culture would inform those decisions. As with all our relocation assistance, we customize what we flexibly provide for a company’s specific needs.

In the past, relocation assistance was often provided for top-org chart employees only. Today, though, they’re being offered to a broader range of valuable team members.

What is the maximum relocation allowance?

According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the maximum amount of relocation assistance allowed is twenty-five percent of the person’s annual rate of basic pay. To arrive at that, take the pay at the beginning of the service period. Then multiply it times the number of service years without exceeding four years to arrive at your maximum number. With OPM approval, your company can raise the amount to fifty percent of the base pay given that critical need is demonstrated. You can pay the incentive in an initial lump sum; in installments; or as a final lump sum. Or, you can combine these methods. This is a high-level response, so reach out to OPM for more specifics.

Does our company need to pay for relocation packages upfront?

Your company can pay for relocation assistance in a broad range of ways as long as you meet OPM requirements as described in the answer to the FAQ of “What is the maximum relocation allowance?” This includes paying expenses directly and reimbursing employees for qualifying ones they’ve paid.
