FAQs by Nick Christian

1.Do I need valuation coverage?

I recommend it. But it depends on your preference and comfort, because it is not a requirement. You're going to automatically get the minimum industry standard of $0.60 per lb. valuation and pay nothing additional for it right out of the gate. That's complimentary.

But I think for what you pay for additional valuation, it's worth it to protect yourself. These are your possessions, your furniture, your keepsake items and things that probably mean an awful lot to you. A little bit of extra assurance that it's going to be taken care of to its full value, I think, is the wise thing to do.

2.Can you help me move my pets?

Yes, we can. We would work with a third-party company to assist in the move of a pet. The nature of our job is assisting with full-service relocation, so we have trusted partners that we work with.

3.Can I choose any day to load my stuff?

You can. That is absolutely an option we offer. You should be aware though, that choosing specific days for loading and delivery is a premium service. Our move coordinators here compare it to booking an airplane ticket on a Tuesday or a Thursday instead of a Friday or a Sunday – days that are less popular are going to be less expensive.

However, when you need that date certainty, it's absolutely a service we can provide, but depending on the day you select the cost could be at a premium.

4.How can I prepare for my move?

Schedule as far in advance as possible – we recommend about eight weeks. Especially if you're moving during the summer months, that's when most Americans decide to move and it can be challenging to schedule dates.

Suddath offers a thorough moving checklist. It will give you a good idea of what you should be thinking about and considering, and when. Your move coordinator will also be available to answer any questions and hep you whenever you need.

5.What is a common issue for moving in Ft. Lauderdale?

There are a lot of people in the moving business down in Florida that are not reputable. These fly-by-night companies usually don't have proper insurance or licensing requirements – which is very dangerous for you, the consumer. They might be cheap initially, but I hear too often those stories about a company like that who will hold your goods hostage, basically, until you give them additional money.

Unfortunately, in South Florida, we hear these types of stories a lot. No matter who you choose to do your move, make sure they are qualified, licensed and have good safety standards. A moving crew is going to be in your home, with your family, and you can never be too careful.

Suddath has an article that outlines a few tips for choosing a reputable moving company, but a good rule of thumb is to check reviews and with the Better Business Bureau.

6.What if you break something? How do I submit a claim?

Contact your coordinator. Your coordinator will send you an electronic claim notification form that you can print or fill out digitally. All instructions are right there on the form. If you have questions, your coordinator can answer those.

We stand by our service and if something comes up that is our failing, although it happens rarely, we will take care of it.

7.I’m looking to move internationally. Can Suddath help?

Yes, we can. We do it all the time, especially in South Florida. We have crews that are trained experts in international packing, wrapping and loading.

We’re constantly dealing with customs, delays at ports, drayage companies, companies that bring containers to and from the port to the warehouse and so forth. We are also experts and understand the different cultures, and international business practices of other agents.

Our experience in these areas make sure that not only are you very clear on what you need to be thinking about in an international move, but that we’re going to be taking care of all the rest, so that you don’t have to.
There are certain things that might be in the control of the government where you're moving to or from, but you can expect excellent communication from Suddath, and if issues arise we will be open, honest and transparent about them, and use our expertise to work through it.

8.What do you do to ensure my items and property are safe and secure during the moving process?

To start off, we're going to complete a detailed digital inventory with you. We're expert, trained packers, furniture wrappers and loaders. We have a warehouse management system that allows us to account for a shipment that far exceeds what our competitors can offer. We use Department of Transportation compliant equipment, and an exceptional safety record with our drivers.

We use a couple of metrics to measure our safety performance rating. One is a United Van Lines (Unigroup) metric that is basically a factor of how many, of what are essentially infraction points, the driver gets compared to the amount of miles they drive. Suddath is one, if not the safest agency in the Unigroup system.

Personally, there's another metric we look at called total incident case rate, which is kind of industry non-specific. A lot of other manufacturing and transportation companies use that metric to measure safety and it’s a measurement of accidents and injuries per 100 employees. South Florida is one of the safest performing markets in Suddath, which is one of the safest agents in Unigroup, so I can say with confidence that we're one of the safest Ft. Lauderdale movers out there.

9.How do you select and hire your employees? Are some contractors?

We use a combination of employees and contractors. However, our contracted employees are exclusive with us, so they don't work for a handful of other moving companies. When you see them arrive at your house, they’re in a Suddath uniform, in a Suddath/United truck, they're being dispatched by Suddath and they're there on Suddath's behalf. They are simply an extension of our company, and are background checked just like all our employees.

We go through a thorough extensive interviewing and training process. We would never put anyone in your home has not passed a background check. That's like a guarantee, a promise that we make. Not every moving company can say that, that's for sure.

10.Moving can be stressful. What can you do to make it easier and simpler for me?

We recognize, and we’re empathetic to your situation. We deal with people that are moving all the time, and we recognize that it’s one of the most stressful things that somebody can go through. As many different people as we help through relocations, I don't feel like our team has become desensitized to the level of anxiety that people have when they're moving.

I personally have moved probably nearly 20 times in my life, so if anybody can speak as a subject matter expert from the other end as being a transferee, as being somebody that's moved, I can. Suddath does an excellent job of communicating with customers, helping do our best to educate you on the process so you know what to expect.

We manage your expectations and provide you with a level of service that you're not going to get anywhere else.

11.Can my possessions be temporarily stored with Suddath?

Yes, you can store your goods short-term or long-term with us in Ft. Lauderdale, where we have 120,000 square feet of warehouse space, and 20,000 square feet of that is air-conditioned.

12.Do you have an executive move service offering?

Yes, we do. We can offer a white-glove service for a customer that needs everything done for them, up to and including coordinating for a maid service to come in and wipe down kitchen cabinets before plates and silverware go in.

There are installation services for your artwork or your televisions and electronics – essentially, we can do everything for a move so that you don't have to do anything.

It’s our called our ‘Suddath Nobility’ service, and whenever someone wants that high-touch, white-glove relocation service from start to finish, we do everything we can for them. Generally, it’s for corporate relocations so that an employee can focus on settling into their job and becoming immediately productive, without having to worry about anything else.

13.Do you offer any discard and donation programs?

Yes, we work with Move For Hunger, collecting our customers unwanted perishable goods that we then make sure get to Ft. Lauderdale food banks and charities. In 2017, we along with our customers, donated over 41,600 lbs. of food.

We host two pretty big charitable events every year in Ft Lauderdale. One being in partnership with United Way of Broward County called ‘tools for schools’ – Publix is also a key sponsor – and we supply hundreds of teachers with free school supplies to help get them through the second half of the year without having to come out of pocket for necessities for their classrooms.

Then we work with Kids in Distress, a local non-profit that helps kids who come from tough situations like broken families and foster homes. Their main annual event is called, ‘Duckfest Derby,’ and what we do is, we receive all these rubber ducks at our facility and we tag these ducks. At the event, people buy a duck for $5, and then thousands of ducks get released into the river in downtown Ft Lauderdale. They pluck one of the ducks out of the river at the finish line, and somebody wins $10,000. Both are fantastic events that we’re happy to participate in and contribute to.

14.What type of commercial environments do you specialize in?

Nearly half of our business in the South Florida area is commercial moving and logistics work, so we feel like we’re just as experienced and strong in those areas as we are at residential household goods moving.

We specialize in hospitality, hotels, healthcare systems, colleges and universities, Fortune 500 office parks, just to name a few. Really, we can perform just about any commercial move with expertise and transparency.

15.What logistics services do you offer?

Suddath’s footprint, expertise and moving industry background and training sets us up to be an excellent logistics services provider. Storage, first mile, last mile, installation, assembly, distribution, we do it all. With Suddath you get a higher level of care.

Our crew is trained and qualified for high-value, inside delivery, inside placement, assembly and debris removal.
