4 things to consider before moving appliances

When prepping for a relocation, consider these things in your decision about moving your appliances.

Appliances can be bulky, heavy and hard to transport, not to mention a costly addition to your moving bill. When planning your relocation, consider these four things before moving your appliances to your new home.

1. Age of the appliance

Before moving, determine the age of appliances that have recommended lifespans. For example, microwaves last about nine years, while a washer and dryer set can last 10 to 13 years. Smaller appliances like fans or space heaters can last upwards of 10 years.

2. Energy efficiency

Since 1992, Energy Star has set the standards for energy efficiency. A new Energy Star-complaint washing machine uses 70 percent less energy and almost 75 percent less water than a washer from 20 years ago. Before a relocation, decide if it makes financial sense to pay to move an appliance that costs more to run than a new one. Choosing between electric and gas can also affect energy costs. Visit the Energy Star website for help deciding which appliances to replace.

3. Space requirements

Does your relocation to a new home increase or decrease your appliance space? New appliances can be not only more energy efficient, but can take up less room. You may also want to eliminate duplicate appliances or ones you no longer use, such as space heaters, fans, toasters, blenders, juicers and food processors. Only move appliances you need that will also fit your new space.

4. Donation or recycling

When you’ve decided to get rid of an appliance, check with friends and family to see if someone else can use it. If not, contact your town offices to find out about appliance recycling. Many allow you to make a reservation for free curbside pickup on certain days. For the appliances you are taking, label their boxes clearly so you or a mover can judge how heavy the box may be.
